Entrepreneur vs Employee Mindset: Which do you have??

Currently in the Property Preservation Industry  (PPI) there is this an atrocious behavior I refer to as “Employee Mindset”.  From the time we are five or six years old and enter the school systems, we are told when to be there, what to do, how to do it, when we can go to lunch, and when we can go home.

So naturally when the PPI flooded the work force with what many have come to call “Craigslist Hacks”, the industry get about 30,000 unqualified business people operating a business.


The idea of giving just enough effort to keep from getting fired is classically referred to as the “employee mindset” and is the very reason most people don’t make good entrepreneurs. They believe that it’s their right to have a job and are convinced that starting their own business would allow them to “make what they are really worth.”

This is currently about 80% if the “business owners” in the PPI. This would be the 80% or so that has been predicted to drop out of the picture as the PPI starts to prepare for change. This my friends is how the industry leading companies like Safeguard Properties, Cyprexx, FAS, LPS etc. have systematically stripped the Independent Contractor element for the industry and created nothing but glorified employee contracts they force everyone to sign.

Yes the major work providers in the PPI have not only taken advantage of the largest labor pool since the Great Depression by intimidating the current contractors in the industry. This was possible as when the National Asset Management Companies (NAMC) or Order Mills, started telling people they have recruited from Craigslist all you have to do is get this license and this insurance.

As I work with many of the small business entrepreneur’s with consultations I consistently find a lack of knowledge. I wish I could get a nickel for every time I hear, “I didn’t know that”. I could retire next week!!!

Here are some tips to keep in mind about being a business owner.

            You are the boss;

  • Employees rely on someone else to tell them what to do. Not a business owner. Business owner provide the direction

        The rulebook is the one you write:

  • Quit allowing yourself to be dictated to. Create your own company policies, Create policy that assists your company, policy that gives your company an edge.

            Change means opportunity:

  • Don’t bury your head in the sand about change to the PPI. It is coming. Get in front of it. The powers to be do not give a rats butt if you want regulation or not, it coming and if you’re not prepared then you will e one of the “employee thinking” business owners that will be a causality statistic with the SBA.

            Clients needs:

  • Remember unless you are working direct with a lender, you have a go between; technically the NAMC is not the client. They are merely facilitating the work order. Your clients are what are important. Do not allow the NACM to place you in uncomfortable situations.

            Remember the following:

  • You determine who you work with
  • What you do
  • When you do it
  • How you do it,
  • Where you do it
  • And for how much
  • Not the other way around.
